New Bylaw for Truckers! - December 2011
Council passed the new Heavy Truck Route Bylaw in council December 06,2011. As truckers it is important to be aware of where you can go, park, and leave your trucks.
What does this mean? First, no more heavy trucks on residential streets. Any vehicle over 5450kgs is prohibited off the truck routes unless delivering goods, on a designated temporary route or on a special permit issued by the Municipality. Vacation RV's, emergency service vehicles, municipal vehicles, Provincial and Federal vehicles, utility companies for example are exempt.
So if you have a big truck and it's parked at your residence, please find alternative parking. If you have any question about this bylaw, please stop in and we can chat about your concerns. If you are concerned about the weight of your vehicle, we will accept a current weigh scale measurement from the Burmis Scale. If you require a permit, please stop into enforcement services to discuss it.
This bylaw will come into force on January 31, 2012 at which time the fines are between $500.00 for traveling off the truck route, $500.00 for operating over the weight restriction, failure to produce a permit or registration documents $200.00 and $200.00 for parking contravention. And a more serious note, the municipality has the authority to tow your truck of which you will be responsible for all costs.
So what is the message? Please find alternative places to park for your rigs. It is no longer acceptable to park on your driveway or on the street. If you own commercial property, you are certainly welcome to continue to park your commercial vehicles on your property as long as it is zoned properly. Residential zoning does not provide permission for big rigs or commercial businesses.
Drive safe, be safe, and act safe!
